For anyone who plays and instrument (that's you), and who has a portable device with internet access (also, most of you), we have found a couple of handy online tools that you may find useful for checking your intonation before the next performance.
Browser-based - Take a look at CHIME, the flash-based online tuner which allows you to select from a wide variety of instruments including trumpet, flute, violin, guitar, etc. You can click on the square and the note will play.
Apple (smartphone/table) - Browsing through the listing of free tuners, one of the leaders is insTuner by Xiao Yixiang. This chromatic tuner is compatible with iPhone 3Gs, 4, 4s, 5, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires ios 4.3 or later.
Android (smartphone/tablet) - The clear leader from the Andriod Market with almost 69,000 likes is gStrings Free tuner. Choose the note, and play your instrument to determine whether you're flat or sharp. It will let you tune any musical instrument, such as the violin, viola, violoncello, bass, guitar, piano and wind instruments. A traditional guage display will tell you clearly where you fall in the range. The same company also has a metronome app available.
